The Joseph L. Parkin Memorial Lecture on Aging

The Parkin lectureship was endowed by a gift from the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago, Illinois, in memory of Joseph Parkin, a retired Banker’s Life and Casualty Co. executive who had served as president of the Retirement Research Foundation in Chicago. The Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago is the nation’s largest private foundation devoted to aging and retirement issues, since 1986. The foundation makes approximately $6 million in grants each year to support programs, research and policy studies to improve the quality of life for older Americans.
Parkin was born on a farm outside Derby, Iowa in 1923 and attended the UI from 1940 – 1943, when he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as an aerial navigator until 1945 and again from 1950-1952.

TITLE: "Palliative Care in Hospitals"
SPEAKER: Diane E. Meier, MD FACP; Director, Center to Advance Palliative Care; Director, Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute and a MacArthur Fellow – 2008 from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York
Diane Meier will draw from her research and considerable work in clinical initiatives in end-of life care, the development of palliative care units, and the role of cancer caregivers for the older cancer patient.

The Parkin lecture focuses on any aspect of research, practice or policy that affects older adults.

SPEAKER: Laura Carstensen, PhD, Professor of Psychology and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, Stanford University.
Laura L. Carstensen is best known for socioemotional selectivity theory, a life-span theory of motivation. Her most current empirical research focuses on ways in which motivational changes influence cognitive processing.
